The hidden WL500GP admin page

While it doesn't appear to be documented, you can browse to the hidden admin page of your stock WL500GP via [http://192.168.1.1/Main_AdmStatus_Content.asp]. Once you get there, you're in a tiny Linux command line session and you can run commands like pwd, mount, ps and so on, which will be handy shortly.

Backing up the original firmware

In case you might want to restore the original ASUS firmware, here's how to back it up. First, it's useful to check what your current firmware version is, which you can see by browsing to the router, then to System Setup, then Firmware Upgrade. Currently, this unit has a listed firmware version of 1.9.7.5.

For instructions on how to save the unit's current firmware, there's a good description [here], to which I'll add only a few comments:

  • You don't need to create the shell script mentioned there; it's sufficient to just type the dd command in the admin window.
  • While the mount command displays a mounted filesystem type of "ext2," it's perfectly acceptable to have a normally-formatted USB drive of type VFAT.
  • Finally, rather than backing up the firmware on the unit itself, I'm guessing you can just download it if you need it from the [ASUS web page], where you can see firmware version 1.9.7.5.
